Hello, my name is Megan White.
I'm a fairly recent college graduate, from just outside of Washington D.C., with a background in art history, cultural studies, community studies, sociology, and environmental studies. I wrapped all of these disciplines into one major, "Art, Culture, and Community," through a program at George Mason University called New Century College. This program allowed me to make sense of the world through art and design. All artists tell us something about the people, places, and times they design for, but artists don't just comment on what's going on around them, they also all have a hand in shaping the voice of their culture, and pushing us forward as a people in innovative, new directions. When we understand art, we can understand the story of a culture...where it is and where it is going.
Over the past year or so I've realized that I know a lot about the big names in art history, but I don't know a lot about what is happening in the art world today. I want to learn about art that is made by the people from my generation, the people who are commenting on and shaping our culture right now. I want to learn about who we are as a people, in this moment, and where we are headed in the future. In an effort to do that I am starting this blog, which will have a post highlighting a new, contemporary artist every week.
This is kind of an experiment for me, but if this all works out and takes off, I hope that this blog will help artists who are just getting started to get their names out. I feel like there is a gap between college and the beginning of an art career and I hope, if this blog becomes successful, to help people through that gap.
But that's enough about me and my hopes for this blog. Coming up next: our first artist, Ryan Kapp!
